Barcaldine, also known as the Garden City of The West, was established in November 1886. In 1891 'The Great Shearer,s Strike' took place under a large ghost gum in the center of town. This site became known as the Tree of Knowledge and led to the start of the Australian Labour Party. Unfortunately the ghost gum was poisoned in May 2006 and never recovered. Today the site houses an architecturally designed memorial, which was officially opened on the 2nd May 2009.

There is plenty to see in Barcaldine. Take a stroll along the Main street and take in the Tree of Knowledge site. Then visit the Australian Workers Heritage Centre and the Historical Museum.

For the traveller with a few days to spend in Barcy, Tom's Artesian Country Tour is a must.

The town also comes alive on the May Day long weekend every year when they have the Tree Of Knowledge Festival.

Barcaldine Tourist park is a well maintained friendly park with powered and unpowered sites, as well as clean, comfortable ensuite cabins.
Join us during the tourist season (May to Sept) for FREE Billy tea and damper and great entertainment.
Campfire meals are also available.
